How to choose an Indonesian SIM or eSIM: prices and where to buy

For local data in Indonesia, compare XL eSIM, Telkomsel SIM, and Tri Tourist Pass based on your trip length and data needs. If you want to keep using your home number and roaming, you can also check your home carrier’s plans. Foreign phones using a local SIM can be registered for an IMEI at a carrier store.

How do I choose an Indonesian SIM or eSIM?

Compare local SIMs for data and price, and your home carrier’s roaming for the convenience of keeping your home number. Before choosing an eSIM, check that your phone supports eSIM and prepare the passport, email address, and IMEI details required for sign-up.

If you plan to visit other areas or islands beyond Bali, check the places you’ll visit on the carrier’s coverage map. XL lists Badung Regency and Denpasar City as 5G areas, while Telkomsel names GraPARI Renon in Denpasar as a 5G hotspot in Bali.

How do I buy an Indonesian SIM or eSIM?

SIM sales counters for Telkomsel, XL, Smartfren, 3/Tri, Axis, and Indosat/IM3 are available in airport arrival areas. Registering a local prepaid SIM requires a passport, KITAS, or KITAP. Staff at carrier counters can help with registration.

  1. XL tourist eSIM

Have a valid foreign passport ready, and enter your passport, email address, and device IMEI details during sign-up. The QR code will be emailed to you after purchase.

  2. Telkomsel Tourist Prepaid Card

Order in advance on the website, then pick it up after arriving in Indonesia, or buy it at GraPARI, a Telkomsel counter, or select retailers.

  3. Telkomsel SIMPATI advance-order plan

Order in advance and pick it up in Bali or Mandalika, Lombok.

  4. Tri Tourist Pass

Buy one from an authorized retailer in the airport arrivals area, ticketing websites, travel agencies, hotels, Indomaret or Alfamart, or a Tourist Pass seller. It is not sold at 3Store.

When do I need to register an IMEI?

Tourists using international roaming with their home SIM do not need to register an IMEI. Short-term tourists using an Indonesian SIM in a foreign phone can register the IMEI at a carrier store to access local mobile networks for up to 90 days.

To keep using a local SIM beyond 90 days, you need to register the IMEI through the Customs website or the Mobile Bea Cukai app. Keep in mind that carrier-store registration for a typical short trip is different from registering an imported device with Customs.

How much does IMEI registration cost, and when should I do it?

The standard IMEI registration process with Customs is free. If the taxable value of items you bring in, such as a phone, exceeds the USD 500 duty-free allowance per person, customs duties and import-related taxes may apply.

As a rule, complete standard IMEI registration before leaving the arrival terminal. You can register within 60 days of arrival after leaving the terminal, but you will not be eligible for the duty-free allowance.

Choose the option that fits your trip

  1. If you want to keep your home number and roaming

Before departure, check that your home carrier’s plan supports Indonesia and compare its data allowance and price.

  2. If you want to use a local data eSIM in Bali

Prepare a valid passport, email address, and device IMEI details for the XL tourist eSIM application.

  3. If you want to use Telkomsel in Bali or Mandalika, Lombok

Order the SIMPATI tourist plan in advance and check the pickup location.

  4. If you plan to use a foreign phone with a local SIM on a short trip

Ask for IMEI registration at a carrier store. You do not need to register an IMEI if you use roaming only with your home SIM.

  5. If you’re traveling to islands or outlying areas

Check coverage for each destination on the carrier’s map, especially for Nusa Penida, Lombok, and Gili, before setting out.
